The shipping forecast follows a clearly defined format:
- summary of gale warnings in force
- synopsis of weather patterns
- 24-hour forecast for each of 30 sea areas, including wind direction and strength, weather and visibility.
Reports from coastal stations give details of actual weather.
Inshore waters forecasts cover waters up to 12 miles offshore.
Radio forecasts in Ireland
RTE Radio 1 on MW 567kHz and 729kHz and FM 88-90MHz
at 0602, 1253, 1655, 2355 (all local times).
The evening forecast times may vary at weekends so make sure you check.

Forecasts may be broadcast on VHF Channels 10, 23, 73, 84 or 86, and exceptionally on Channel 67, after an initial announcement on Channel 16. Times are in UT (GMT).
Irish Coast Guard
Announced on VHF Ch16 followed by transmission on working channels at 0103, 0403, 0703, 1003, 1303, 1603, 1903, 2203 (all local times).
Navtex provides written weather forecasts (in English) around most of the world's coastal waters and up to 300 miles offshore. The service is free but requires a special Navtex receiver that is available from yacht chandlers/marine electronics dealers.
